12 to 48 months

Polylactic acid made of corn starch or sugar cane and depends on large fields of crops which can be used as food supply for the world’s growing population

Biodegradation Process:

PLA can only break down when all oxygen is removed and constantly heated above 140°F or 60°C for at least 10 days. Does not break down into natural elements. It needs to be sent in a commercial composing facility for processing. Cannot be recycled as it contaminates the process

Biodegradation Time in NATURE:

800 to 1400 years. Entering oceans, PLAs become “regular” plastic, consumed by marine wildlife and fish, endangering or killing them.
